The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) announced that localized heavy rainfall is likely in Yangon, Bago, Ayeyawady, Tanintharyi, Kayin and Mon from September 24 to 28 due to strengthening monsoon winds and atmospheric instability over the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal.
Due to the possibility of strengthening monsoon winds and atmospheric instability over the Andaman Sea and southern Bay of Bengal, as well as strong development of cumulonimbus clouds, rains or thundershowers will be scattered in upper Sagaing Region, Kachin and northern Shan states, from fairly widespread to widespread in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway and lower Sagaing, Ayeyawady and Tanintharyi regions, and Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine, southern and eastern Shan states, with isolated regionally heavy fall in Yangon, Bago, Ayeyawady and Tanintharyi regions and Kayin and Mon states from September 24 to 28.
Occasionally, squalls are expected along the delta, Rakhine coast and offshore areas, with rough seas. During squalls, surface winds may reach 30 to 35 mph, while wave heights may reach about 9 to 11 feet along the delta, Rakhine coast and offshore areas. Occasional squalls are also expected in the Gulf of Mottama, along the Mon-Tanintharyi coast and offshore areas, with moderate to rough seas. Surface winds may reach up to 30 mph during squalls, with wave heights of about 8 to 10 feet.
The DMH has therefore warned that heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds could trigger natural hazards such as flash floods and landslides due to strengthening monsoon winds and atmospheric instability over the Andaman Sea and southern Bay of Bengal, as well as strong cumulonimbus cloud development. People living near mountainous areas are advised to remain alert to landslide risks, while those living near small rivers and streams are advised to remain vigilant against flooding and inundation. Domestic air operators, as well as nearshore and offshore fishing vessels and ships operating along the Myanmar coast and offshore areas, are also advised to take precautionary measures.
