Ye Kyaw Street market returns after four-year gap to Mark National Day

The Ye Kyaw Street Market, which had been on hiatus for more than four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has reopened to commemorate National Day. The market will run from November 22 to 26 this year.

The last event was held in 2019, and residents are excited to see its return. “The market is back this year with as many shops as before. It’s traditionally held for five days, and though it used to be during the Thadingyut period, this year it coincides with National Day,” said a resident of Pazundaung Township.

First organized in 1947 by residents of Ward No. 8 in Pazundaung Township, the Ye Kyaw Street Market became an annual tradition leading up to Myanmar’s independence.

Initially a simple local market, it evolved in the 1990s, attracting young people with modern designs and creative displays. While the market was historically held in early October, its revival this year brings nostalgia and joy to the community.
