To prevent flooding, more than 100 households in the Eikpyat area of Hinthada Township in Ayeyawady Region are being relocated and water is being diverted into a containment area.
The local authorities have started these procedures after notifying the residents in advance.
"Since last night, we have been diverting water using syphon technology. Water will also be diverted through temporary structures. Water is being diverted into the containment area between the new embankment and the riverbank. With the water stored in the containment area, even if the riverbank collapses, the water will not be able to rush into the area with full force. This measure will prevent massive water entry and protect the houses inside the containment area and the newly constructed embankment," explained a local official.
U Zaw Min Oo, the Chief of the Hinthada District Fire Services Department, who is assisting in the efforts, said, "There are more than 140 houses inside the containment area where water is being diverted. We are helping relocate these houses to safe areas in collaboration with the village administration committee. The households are being relocated to designated safe zones provided by the government. We have been relocating them since this morning. We are also providing support to the Department of Irrigation in strengthening and protecting the embankments."
As water from the upper regions of Myanmar flows down, the Ayeyawady River in Hinthada has exceeded the danger level of 44 feet by about one and a half feet as of July 15.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology predicted in their announcement on the afternoon of July 15 that the river water level in Hinthada could rise by about one more foot in the next day and remain above the danger level.
