The container ships have initiated cross-border trade between Yangon, Myanmar, and Ranong, Thailand. 

On July 8, a large container ship departed from Ahlon Port in Yangon Region, docked at Kawthoung Port in Taninthayi Region, and continued its journey to Ranong, Thailand.

This novel trade model emerged from discussions during the Myanmar-Thai regional border committee meeting held on June 29, 2024, at Pale Thanda Hotel in Myeik, Taninthayi Region. 

As part of this system, cargo ships arriving from Yangon undergo inspections at the checkpoint in Kawthoung Port.

The border trade situation between Myawady and Phayathonsu in Kayah State remains suspended due to conflicts. Officials recommend using the container system via sea travel for these regions.

The Indian ship MV Beypore Sultan spearheaded this new trade approach. Loaded with four containers of 99 tonnes of refined lead metal and 52 containers of 1,300 tonnes of millet, it arrived at Kawthoung Port on the night of July 7. 

Cargo inspections were completed on July 8 before the ship continued its journey to Ranong, Thailand. The vessel will return to Kawthoung after loading goods from Thailand and continue delivering cargo to Yangon Region.
