The State Administration Council’s chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said the election preparations are facing obstacles from armed violence.
He made the remark during a meeting with officials of the registered political parties in Nay Pyi Taw on January 6.
The Senior General said the election preparations are facing challenges from armed violence. He said the SAC is working to restore peace and stability as soon as possible. He said the election must be dignified and fair, and the political parties must work for the national interest. He asked the officials from the political parties to share their views and suggestions for the good of the nation.
He said the SAC is preparing for a free and fair election and will hand over power to the winning party. He said the country is suffering from armed conflicts, Covid-19 pandemic, and economic crisis, caused by the violent attempts to solve the political problem. He said the SAC is taking measures to prevent and treat Covid-19, and to boost the national economy.
The SAC chairman said ethnic armed organizations are exploiting the situation and escalating their terrorist acts. He said the military is working with the police and the people to stop the violence, which is still happening in some places. He also said the SAC is preparing for a dignified election, unlike the previous government, which held a disgraceful election. He said the parties here are trusted and accepted as democratic forces. He said the party members should use their strength for the national interest and contribute to the peace and stability of the country.
He said the last elections used the FPTP system, but the SAC will consult with the political parties and ethnic groups about the PR system.
He also said the SAC will prepare for the constitutional amendment, which will be done through the parliament. He said the SAC will try to meet the needs of the political parties, but some demands will be handled in the long-term interest. He said he will listen to the submissions of each political party and do his best. He urged the parties to cooperate for the country and the people. He said the SAC is working hard for the election.
The meeting was attended by 39 registered political parties’ leaders.
