People in Yangon Region will be able to celebrate the New Year without worrying about the night curfew, as the regional government has decided to suspend it for one day.

The curfew, which usually runs from 1 am to 3 am, will not be enforced on December 31, according to a letter sent to the district administration councils on December 29.

 The letter said that the suspension was a temporary measure under Section 144 of the Penal Code of Myanmar.

The night curfew imposed in 44 townships in Yangon Region was reduced from four hours to two hours on October 27 this year.

A Count Down Party will be held in Public Square in Yangon on New Year’s Eve, and a ward administrator confirmed that the curfew will not apply on that day.

“Yes, it’s true. The curfew has been temporarily lifted for one day on New Year’s Day”, he said.
