The 193 people who were arrested in the incident at Loikaw University were free again on November 29, but 11 people, including the rector, are still under arrest, sources said.

On November 24, 103 teachers, students and family members from Loikaw University abducted by the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and People’s Defence Force (PDF) arrived back in Taunggyi town.

"Today, 193 teachers and students who were arrested from Loikaw University have been released. We want to thank those who want peace, the peace negotiators, and the mediation groups. There are still 11 people to be freed. We want to say that we will continue to work on this," said Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesman of the State Administration Council (SAC).

The KNPP and PDF attacked the security teams providing security at Loikaw University in Kayah State on November 13 and 14 and detained teachers, students and family members.

The fighting occurred as the KNPP and PDF came and fired at Loikaw University, and the third round of distance education exams scheduled to begin at the university on November 13 had to be postponed indefinitely, according to the SAC.
