A section of an irrigation canal embankment measuring approximately 300 feet in length and 60 feet in width collapsed in Nyaungdon Township in Ayeyawady Region due to erosion caused by the Ayeyawady River,the Ayeyarwady Region Government said in a statement.

The incident occurred at around 6 a.m. on August 25, 2026, between Mileposts 10/6 and 10/7 of the Nyaungdon  embankment along a branch of the Ayeyarwady River, in Chaung Phyar Village, Chaung Gyi Village Tract, Nyaungdon Township. The collapse was caused by erosion from the river.

Following the incident, repair work on the embankment has been carried out under the close supervision of Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Bo Bo Kyaw and Director-General of the Directorate of Water Resources and River Development U Win Hlaing.

Led by Ayeyawady Region Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Kyaw Myo Tin, Municipal Affairs Minister U Maung Maung Oo and Chairman of the District Management and Administration Committee U Kyaw Thet Khaing, officials from the District Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department and the District Water Resources and River Development Department, along with military personnel, police officers and firefighters, have been working at the site.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m., three excavators and more than 1,000 personnel have been deployed to carry out immediate embankment repair and reinforcement works.

The regional government statement said that there is no cause for concern regarding the situation.
