The body of a monk who jumped from Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) on the Sagaing side into the river at about 4pm on March 5 has been recovered.
The body was found by a combined team of Sagaing Township Fire Brigade and SERT search and rescue team this morning.
“There is an island about five nautical miles from the lower part of the bridge. We found the body while we searched there. In previous incidents, some bodies were found only after about a week,” said an official from SERT team.
The dead body was sent to the mortuary of Sagaing People’s Hospital as the monk who jumped off the bridge could not be identified.
In January also, a 31-year-old man jumped from the same bridge but he was rescued alive by a fishing boat.
There were at least 10 people who jumped from Sagaing Bridge (Inwa) and Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) in 2019 and 2020, and only one of them could be rescued alive.
