U.S. labels the recent conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi a ‘sham sentence’
Derek Chollet, Counselor of the United States State Department, calls the recent conviction of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi a “sham sentence” in an interview with VOA News.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to a further 5 years in prison on April 27th for the corruption case in which former Yangon Region chief minister U Phyo Min Thein testified against her by giving her gold and U.S. dollars.
Counselor Chollet says that Myanmar’s military government will not be part of the ASEAN summit in Washington. Similar to the ASEAN meetings, Myanmar will only be represented at a nonpolitical level.
U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to hold an ASEAN Leaders Summit in Washington on May 12 and 13.
Chollet also says the United States will not engage with the ruling military until there is a “cessation of violence, a return to democratic governance, and adherence to the ASEAN 5-Point Consensus.”
