A man who shot fires at the American Center in Yangon has been arrested in Bahan Township, according to a news broadcast by State-run MRTV at 8 pm on April 7.

Receiving information that fires were shot at the American Center on Inya Road in Kamayut Township, Yangon, at 7 am on March 27, officials went to the scene and found seven cracks cased gunfire on the security room made of glass.

After investigation, officials concerned searched and arrested Aye Thaw Kaung, who shot the fires at the center, at his home in Bahan Township together with a Mercedes at about 9am on March 30, MRTV announced.

After interrogation, he said he bought a black pistol used with a gas cylinder and 150 lead bullets online for Ks190,000 on February 18 and received them on February 25. On that day, he bought a fake car license plate (YGN 5P-7463) for Ks40,000. Then, the fake license plate was installed into the Mercedes his father owns in place of YGN 3P-5569. He drove the car on Inya Road near the American Center for three or four times. On March 27, he left his home and arrived near the center. He then opened about seven rounds of fire with the use of his gas gun at the glass surrounding the center through his car window.

At about 7 am on March 28, he threw off a blue polythene bag containing the gas pistol, 100 bullets in a round box, two cylinders of CO2 and the fake license plate into the Ngamoyeik creek.  

As a supporter of the National League for Democracy, Aye Tha Kaung participated in about 16 protests in Yangon areas such as the region government office, Myaynigone junction, Hledan overpass, the Korean and the US embassies. His intention to open fire on the American Center was to harm State peace and stability and the rule of law. Measures are being taken to take legal action against him, the MRTV news broadcast said.
