A Union Election Commission member has said the commission is ready to hold the election in the constituencies where the general election did not take place on November 8 if security and administrative organizations can guarantee safety and a free and fair election there.

UEC member Myint Naing was answering the question of a reporter who asked about any plan to hold an election in the constituencies where the general election could not take place for various reasons.

“As I have said now, we will hold the election if we have a situation where a free, fair and safe election can be guaranteed. In this context, we have always asked security and administrative bodies for their remarks. If they guarantee that, we are ready to hold the election,” Myint Naing said.

He said the commission already had the voter lists adding that only a reassessment for eligible voters is necessary.

He said about 70 percent of the eligible voters had voted in the election as they had earlier expected.

Asked about how the commission can firmly publicize the election results, Myint Naing said: “Don’t worry about the election results. All have been recorded on Form-16. It cannot be erased or amended. Vote results (Form-16) were counted before the very eyes of polling station representatives of respective parliamentary candidates who ran for election. They have given their signatures. Advance voting (Form-18) follows the suit as well. We cannot change the data at all.”

He reiterated that there is evidence and the results could not be changed at all.
