Election results in Naungmo and Khaunglanhpu townships in northern Kachin State will be announced over ten days after election day as transportation access to those townships is difficult, according to Kachin State election sub-commission.
Ballot papers from some villages in those townships will be arrived in Naungmo and Khaunglanhpu townships in about one week and it will take more time to arrive in district-level townships, said Mary May Nan, Chair of the state election sub-commission.
“In the 2015 general election, it took 15 days to reach into our hands. They walked for six days to deliver ballots to Naungmo and Khaunglanhpu townships and more days to district-level townships. We cannot do the vote counts by phone. We have to scrutinize them in detail and then release them. Staff from five government offices are helping us till many midnights,” she said.
Although there is no case handled directly by the state election sub-commission in the 2020 general election, the respective village election sub-commission is taken action as some are mistakenly taken wrong ballot papers and some came to cast ballots on behalf of sisters and relatives.
Eligible voters in the state are 1,149,783 in this general election and the number of voter lists is still counted.
“No danger has occurred except for a teacher, who is assigned as head of a polling station in Khaunglanhpu, was drifted away while he is taking a bath in a stream,” she said.
Voting materials are sent to polling stations to Khaunglanhpu, Tsawlaw and Pannandin sub-township in Naungmon using military helicopters due to poor transportation and over 300 teachers are giving training at Myitkyina and Putao to send to polling stations in remote areas.
Heavy rain caused landslides along the road leading to those townships.
