As Myanmar is an agriculture-based country, it has potential to fulfill the world's food requirement after COVID-19, according to Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relation Thaung Tun on June 16.
He said these words at the video conference held with State Counselor Aung san Suu Kyi, Sett Aung, who formulated the economic relief plan and deputy minister for Planning, Finance and Industry and chairman of UMFCCI Zaw Min Win on remedies to less COVID-19 impact on economy.
“Myanmar is a country with food sufficiency for local consumption and being an exporter, using modern agricultural technologies; existing opportunities must be used for development of the country. In COVID-19, emphasis must be on agricultural products which can be exported. As an agricultural country, Myanmar has the potential to fulfill the global food requirement after COVID-19,” said Thaung Tun.
Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr, Aung Thu participated in the discussion. In response to the impact on the agricultural sector, arrangements for multi-sector, i;e, agriculture, livestock breeding and small scale production businesses will be implemented.
He said that about 70 percent of Myanmar’s population is in rural areas and so the main economy of Myanmar is agriculture. Therefore, a policy on development of the agriculture sector which covers the future vision has been drawn.
