A total of 232 cyclone shelters have been built across the country, with nine shelters located in Yangon, said Yangon Region Minister for Social Affairs Naing Ngan Lin.

Since 2009, the government has been building cyclone shelters in regions and states, using the funds contributed by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and donors, in order that the people living near sea and adjacent areas can temporarily take shelter in case of natural disasters like Tsunami and storms.

Nine cyclone shelters are built in Yangon South District close to the sea—two in Khayan Township, one in Thongwa Township, one in Kyauktan Township, one in Kawmhu Township and four in Kungyangon Township. The Ministry of Education, village administrators and social organizations are working on the maintenance of cyclone shelters for their durability, Naing Ngan Lin added.

Plan is under way to build cyclone shelters in Thongwa, Kungyangon and Dagon Seikkan Townships.
