Nyo Nyo Thin, the founder of Yangon Watch, has said the Yangon Region government is weak in transparency and accountability, adding that it deserves no pass mark.

Yangon Watch is an independent monitoring organization for government performance.

The organization made an educative campaign for the public in front of the North Oakkalapa Township Court on December 17 and criticized the government in response to a media question.

Nyo Nyo Thin, a former member of the Yangon Region Parliament, said her organization observed the performance of YBS (Yangon Bus Service) by the government for over a year. But, its performance deserved no pass mark. Particularly, the government had weaknesses in transparency, she added.

"Earlier this year, we didn't criticize the performance of the Yangon government. We cooperated with them in YBS activities. We watched them for about a year. But we can't give them a pass mark. It has weaknesses in transparency and accountability. This is why we put our Yangon government at the bottom of the list of all 14 states and regions. It is the Yangon government that has spent the largest amount of public funds. When we compare it with other states and regions, it is almost at the bottom in terms of serving the public interest. We have recorded the Yangon government as the one with least transparency and accountability," said Nyo Nyo Thin.

As regards the failure to submit the audit report (2017-2018) of the Yangon Region as directed by the government, she said her organization always has a watchful eye on the audit reports as well as Yangon Region MPs and will release information in due course.

"We always monitor the government, not audit reports only. We also watch the performances of MPs," she said.

She said the failure to submit audit reports is tantamount to breaching the law and the government has to take responsibility.
