The compilation of voter lists in some armed conflict-hit townships in Shan and Rakhine State has competed, according to the relevant election sub-commission.

Htin Kyaw, Chair of Shan State Election Sub-Commission said: “We faced some difficulties in compiling the list of voters due to armed conflicts in some townships in Shan State. But the sub-commission can meet the deadline set for September. Shan State has 3.4 million eligible voters for 2020 General Election. The number of eligible voters is expected to increase by nearly 400,000 compared to that in 2015.”

The figures do not include those from the army. The sub-commission will compile the list of eligible voters from the army when it receives additional directive from the Union Election Commission. Now we cannot get updated figures when we compile the list from the army. In 2015 General Election, there were more than 90,000 eligible voters from army in Shan State, he added.

Thurein Htut, secretary of Rakhine State Election Sub-Commission said: Despite the fights between the Tatmadaw and the AA in some townships in Rakhine State, the sub-commission have compiled the list of eligible voters for 2020 General Election. We are unable to release the exact number of voters. The lists have been submitted to the Union Election Commission.”

The UEC carried out the compilation of voters from July to September after designating the year 2019 as the voter list compilation year.

Myint Naing, Spokesperson of the UEC said: “We roughly made the grand total in September. We will make updates to the lists every month.”
