A feasibility study on Yangon Urban Mass Rapid Transport (YUMRT) will conclude at the end of this year and that the project is intended to begin in 2022, said Ba Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Railways.

“The report of the feasibility study on YUMRT project is being implemented with the assistance of the JICA and it will end at the end of 2019. We will have to decide how the project will go on with PPP (Public, Private, Partnership) or BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer). The construction will begin in 2022 and it is expected to finish in 2017,” said U Ba Myint.

The first prioritized part of the YUMRT was made known to the public in June and July.

Japan is conducting feasibility study on the first prioritized part of the project and it is 18 km long, linking Hlaingthaya to Parami station and it is the railroad section linking the east with the west of Yangon.

Yangon is in badly need of high-class rail system, bus system and other transport services.

The feasibility study by the JICA started in May in 2018. The YUMRT project includes Yangon elevated railway linking the east with the west and the south with the north.

The current feasibility study on the project began in May in 2018 and will finish at the end of 2019.
