People living beside the bank of the Bago River and nearby low lying areas have moved to nearby flood relief camps as water level in the river is reached above its danger level on September 12.

Water flowed into streets and houses in Kyunthayar, Kyaukkyisu, Kalyarni, Mazin, Zinetaung and Zinemyauk wards and low lying areas and locals are moved to nearby flood relief camps. A total of six temporary flood relief camps are opened at Kyunthayar ward alone and more than 6,000 flood victims from over 1,300 family households are taking shelter.

“Flood victims came to take shelter at the monastery when water level in the river was reached above its danger mark for the first time this year. The authorities fixed 880 centimeters as its danger mark and now its at 906 centimeters. Many flood victims from Kyaukkyisu ward are taking shelter at nearby flood relief camps,” said Myo Htut Zaw, administrator of Kyunthayar ward.

Floods occurred across Bago Region. A total of 36 schools from Thayarwady district and 25 schools from Bago district are closed and more schools may close due to floods, according to the office of the head of the education department for Bago Region.

Locals from villages along Bago River also need assistance.
