Thaphansake, Kintar, Setawgyi and Myogyi dams did not have enough water for summer crops in this year and water from the four dams will be provided for drinking water as a priority after providing water for paddy fields in the rainy season, announced the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation on September 8.
According to figures from the ministry released till September 7, there are 39 dams in which water is spilling out from spillway in ten regions and states including Yangon Region. They are one dam each from Kayin and Chin states and Sagaing Region, 13 dams in Bago Region, eight dams in Magway Region, four dams in Mon State, five dams in Rakhine State, four dams in Yangon Region and two dams in Ayeyawady Region.
The capacity of water in Thaphansake, Kintar, Setawgyi and Myogyi dams are lower this year compared with the same period in recent years.
Staff from the irrigation and water utilization management department are cooperating with local authorities and farmers to efficiently use water in paddy field.
The ministry will provide water in the dams for summer paddy fields and other crops after providing drinking water, it said.
