Thaungyin River, which overflowed and flooded Myawady in Kayin State following heavy rains, has receded, and residents and various organizations carried out a joint cleanup operation on the morning of August 29 to remove waste left behind in low-lying wards.

The water level of the Thaungyin River in Myawady began rising above the danger level on August 20, inundating all low-lying areas of five wards in the town. More than 2,000 people were forced to relocate to temporary evacuation camps.

Although the floodwaters have now receded, large amounts of mud and garbage were left along roads in the low-lying wards. Therefore, officials from the district and township administrative bodies, ward administrators and officials, township municipal officials, ethnic armed organizations, police personnel, the Maternal and Child Welfare Association, women’s affairs organizations, and philanthropic organizations jointly conducted the cleanup operation on August 29.

In addition, joint cleaning activities are regularly carried out every Saturday in the Myawady border town. Following the recession of the river, various organizations have been working together to remove and clear the waste left behind by the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, in Hpa-an, the capital of Kayin State, groups have also been formed to conduct joint garbage collection and cleanup activities at prominent sites and places frequented by domestic and international visitors.
