Xinhua, a Chinese state sponsored news agency, dismissed six journalists from its Myanmar office, including its Chief Editor Tun Tun Oo, sources said.

They were informed about the dismissal after they attended a meeting held on December 3.

“They said they have to make lay-offs due to tightening budget. We have been told that we will receive employment rights including entitlements in line with labour laws as we have been dismissed,” said one of the journalists that preferred to stay anonymous.

According to rules and regulations of Xinhua Myanmar, the employer needs to notify one month in advance if they want to dismiss a person from the agency.

When the Daily Eleven contacted Chief Executive Officer Hsu Myat Mon from the Xinhua Myanmar in regards to the news, she replied that she had no right to answer the interview right now and she will make contact later.

Xinhua Myanmar, financially supported by Chinese government, introduced its news services in Burmese language on May 8, 2015.

Xinhua news agency had established its news services in several other countries including Myanmar, Hong Kong, Egypt, Laos and more as well as offering its news in English, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Portugese, Arabic, Japanese and Korean languages.
