A woman seen being brutally killed with knives in a video circulating on social media has been identified as a resident of Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region, according to an investigation by Eleven Media Group, with local residents saying she was abducted and killed after being accused of being a military informant.

The video sparked competing accusations on social media, with some anti-government groups alleging that the killing was carried out by the Warazup People’s Militia, a militia operating in Kachin State. The Warazup People’s Militia has denied any involvement in the killing.

Eleven Media reported that the victim, identified as Daw Min Min, lived in the Aung Thiri Ward of Khin-U town, locally known as Taung Ywar. Residents contacted by the media outlet confirmed her identity and said she was unmarried and lived in the area before her disappearance.

A local resident familiar with the case said Daw Min Min was taken away by an armed group while she was working in a paddy field. The resident alleged that she was subsequently killed after being accused of having links to the wife of a retired school headmaster whose son was reportedly a military officer.

Residents said the killing might have occurred along the Mu River between Khin-U and Ye-U, although the exact location could not be independently confirmed.

The incident is believed by local residents to have occurred around 2022 or 2023, when killings linked to accusations of being military informants were reportedly widespread in and around Khin-U. Residents said several similar incidents took place in surrounding villages during the period.

One resident also described the killing of three siblings from Aung Mingalar Ward, saying they were killed separately after allegedly being accused of being informants. The accounts, however, were based on local testimony and could not be independently verified.

Khin-U residents said armed PDF groups operate under different names in villages surrounding the town and that some members live among civilians while engaging in agricultural work. One resident alleged that some groups were linked to PDF battalions in Shwebo District.

The circulation of the killing video has led to renewed debate over its origin and the identity of those responsible. Supporters of the military have argued that the language heard in the video is consistent with the central Myanmar region and questioned claims that the killing was carried out by the Warazup group.

The Warazup People’s Militia is based around Warazup (San Pya) village along the Lido Road between Hpakant and Tanai townships in Kachin State. The group has operated alongside the military in security activities in the area since 2021, according to the report.

Claims of killings carried out under the label of eliminating “informants” have been repeatedly reported in Myanmar since the political changes of February 2021. The National Unity Government has previously denied having a policy of eliminating alleged informants, while killings of civilians accused of providing information to authorities have also drawn criticism from opposition groups and diplomatic circles.

Myanmar government figures cited in the report said that 9,908 civilians, including monks, children, administrative officials and government employees, had been killed by armed groups following various accusations between 1 February 2021 and 26 December 2025. The figures and individual allegations could not be independently verified.
