Vehicles have resumed crossing the bridge on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway near Moe Kaung Village in Thaton Township after a temporary repair was completed. The bridge had been severely damaged by a mine explosion on May 3, and traffic was halted.
The blast, which occurred at around 11:00 PM, initially caused significant damage to the bridge. Although it had been partially repaired following an earlier mine explosion, the structure eventually collapsed. This forced large vehicles, including passenger buses, to halt their travel, while only smaller vehicles were able to use alternate inter-village roads.
However, the authorities have now completed a temporary repair, allowing traffic to resume. The repairs involved filling the creek beneath the bridge with soil to stabilize the structure. From 4:00 pm on April 4, vehicles traveling between Yangon and Mawlamyine were able to cross the bridge once again.
A local resident explained, "The bridge is not very large, so we filled the creek with soil. After that, vehicles from Yangon started going through first, followed by those traveling from Mawlamyine."
On February 28, 2024, at about 3:30 am, the Moe Kaung Bridge was destroyed by a mine. The explosion completely destroyed the bridge, which was about 37 feet long and 48 feet wide, and also destroyed a house and several shops near the bridge, according to locals.
