US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called for the violence to end immediately, the release of all detainees and the restoration of Myanmar's democratic path on November 8.
The US Secretary of State made the call in announcing the one-year anniversary of Myanmar's 2020 general election.
Myanmar held multi-party general elections a year ago to elect a new government. Independent observers reported that the election has had some ups and downs, but reaffirmed the commitment of the pro-democracy by people of Myanmar, said the US Secretary of State.
The US Secretary of State says the February 1 military takeover was an attempt to break the Myanmar people's commitment to democracy.
In addition, military crackdowns have further undermined human rights and fundamental freedoms. The people had made a strong demand and the military takeover reversed a decade of progress toward the true democracy that is still being demanded, said Anthony Blinken.
He said on November 8, the anniversary of the election, he pays tribute to the efforts being made to respect human rights and the rule of law in the country to return to the path of democracy and to the people of Myanmar, including the people who gave their lives for it.
In addition, the United States is committed to increasing accountability for justice and for the above issues and other forms of oppression, he said.
