UN Special Envoy meets with displaced persons in Maungdaw

KITSAPA- The United Nation’s Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, met with the displaced persons who recently returned to Myanmar at the Maungdaw District General Administrative Office on November 18th and asked about their sufferings.

A delegation led by the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy arrived in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, on November 18th.

Later, she met with the Soe Aung, administrator of Maungdaw District, and Police Lt-Col Aung Myint Htay at the Maungdaw District General Administrative Office and discussed about the current developments in Maungdaw Township within one year, regional peace and security and the return of displaced persons.

She also met with ethnics, Islamic and Hindus and asked about regional situation, their lives, food and shelter as well as the government’s assistance.

Soe Aung, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Colonel Min Than, Rakhine State Security and Border Affairs Minister and officials were accompanied the UN’s special envoy tour.

The special envoy and party later proceeded to the Rakhine State parliament and they met with Parliament Speaker San Kyaw Hla.

Both sides frankly exchanged views on flash fights between the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army (AA), ceasefire and peace talks, increased numbers of IDPs and worries about their physical and mental sufferings, measures to be taken by the parliament over the conditions of IDPs, health, education and social conditions of IDPs, re-entry of displaced persons who fled to Bangladesh into Rakhine State and comments on coming Election-2020.

Later, they went to the office of Arakan National Party and met the party’s leaders.

At the meeting, they discussed about flash fighting took place in Rakhine State, grievance of the innocent people and their arrests and providing aid for the IDPs.
