Tycoon says he paid $550,000 to State Counsellor from 2018 to 2020 to facilitate his businesses

Maung Waik, owner of Say Paing Construction Company, has testified that he himself paid US$550,000 to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi as well as aid donations to government organizations from 2018 to 2020 with the intention to facilitate his businesses, MWD TV announced at 8pm news hour on March 17. 

“In order to facilitate my businesses, I provided aid and donations to relevant government organizations. After a staff member of my company introduced me to Daw Khin May Oo working at Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s home in 2017, we have friendly relations. In May 2018, with her help, I visited Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. I myself offered US$100,000 in a black envelope to her in front of U Kyauk Hsan and U Hla Myo for Daw Khin Kyi Foundation. In 2019 also, I gave a black envelope containing US$150,000 to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. In 2020 February, I gave her US$50,000. In April again, I myself paid US$250,000 to her. At that time, no one was around,” Maung Waik said.  

According to his statement, Maung Waik gave Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy, a total of US$550,000—US$100,000 in May 2018, US$150,000 in May 2019, US$50,000 in February 2020 and US$250,000 in April 2020. 

As Aung San Suu Kyi has got involved in such corruption cases, according to preliminary investigations, the Anti-Corruption Commission is taking further procedures to take action in accord with the anti-corruption law, MWD TV announced.
