Two people have died of rattlesnake bites in Paung Township, Mon State, in one day, according to local sources.

While Aye Wanna, aged 23, of Nyaungon Village was working on a farm in Mayanchaung Kwin of Thegin village, known as Meaypwaygon (rattlesnake hillock ) on August 12, he was bitten by a rattlesnake and died, said a local resident.

The funeral of Maung Aye Wanna was held on 13 August. The local resident further said that on the same day Ma Khin Hla Mon of Saykhanlan, Theigon Village, was bitten by another rattlesnake while catching crabs. Her funeral was also held August 13.

The reason for calling that place ' Rattlesnake Hillock ', as stated by a resident of Theigon village, was that rattlesnakes often bit people there and that no one knew when the place started to be known as 'Rattlesnake Hillock'.

Lower Mayanchaung Kwin, close to the Theigon village seaside of Paung Township, people have been frequently bitten by snakes, most of which are rattlesnakes.

This year, about 100 people have been bitten by snakes, and five persons died in Mon State, according to the State Health and Medical Services Department.
