The rumours circulating in social media about the resignation of Aung Kyi, the Chair of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) based on political, economy and social problems, is not true, said Zaw Htay, Spokesperson of President Office, replying to a question raised by a reporter during a press briefing held at Presidential House on December 2.

“I saw that many people criticized about the resignation in social media. He resigned from his post of his own accord as he has planned ways to escape from worldly desires and attachments. There is no conflict between government and Aung Kyi and it is the same with the ACC. Besides he had no political, economy and social problems,” said the spokesperson.

Leaders of the countries approved his resignation as he has planned ways to escape from worldly desires and attachments next year, he said.

“He expressed his intention in the letter sent to the President and State Counsellor. He said he wants to escape from worldly desires and attachments as he is 75-year old while he is in good health. The President and State Counsellor accepted his request and approved his resignation,” he said.

Myanmar ranked No.1 in Asian countries according to global corruption barometer as Aung Kyi led the ACC to fight against corruption systematically, he added.

“He tried to fight against the corruption in Myanmar and we asked the commission that his resignation can hamper the commission process. We have been told that they drew zero draft in related with national strategy to fight against corruption and the working committees can continue their work,” he said.

Although Aung Kyi is retried from his duty as the Chair of the ACC, the government appreciates his efforts as he made sure not to hamper the commission work before his retirement. The ACC needs to maintain the momentum to fight against corruption, said Zaw Htay.

Aung Kyi, appointed as Minister for Liaison in former military junta era, was taken over as a negotiator between military leaders and Aung San Suu Kyi and he was appointed as the Chair of ACC by NLD led government on November, 2017.

His term as the Chair of the ACC will be ended at the end of March next year.

Aung Kyi, a former Maj-Gen in the army, was appointed as Minister for Labour, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Minister for Information in former President Thein Sein’s era.
