The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party expressed their regret over the killing of Ye Thein, Chairman of NLD party for Buthidaung Township, who was abducted by the Arakan Army (AA), and they strongly denounced the killing of innocent people, announced the NLD on December 27.

The killing of Ye Thein is showing the existence of organizations that don’t like rules of law, public security and national reconciliation, according to the announcement.

“We viewed the killing as an obstacle to national reconciliation,” said Dr Myo Nyunt, Spokesperson of the NLD.

The party will join hand with the people to wipe out the use of violence to solve the political problems.

The announcement is made after the NLD’s spokesperson said on December 26 that the party is trying to confirm the death of Ye Thein and they will announce a statement if the case is confirmed.

Ye Thein went missing on December 11 while he was preparing to hold a show of support on December 12 for State Counsellor who was defending Myanmar against The Gambia at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

AA chief Major-General Tun Myat Naing said the group detained him because he planned to organize a rally in support of the State Counselor.

The AA released a statement on December 25 that the Chairman of NLD party for Buthidaung Township was killed in an attack by the army.

The AA said in its statement that its fighters were injured when artillery shells fired by the army hit their camp located on a mountain about three kilometers away from Oaktaung Village, Buthidaung Township on December 25 and Ye Thein was killed in the attack.

Brig-Gen Zaw Win Tun, Spokesperson of Tatmawdaw True News Information Team has denied the AA’s claim that Ye Thein was killed by a military strike while being detained by AA and the army learned from locals that he had been killed during the interrogation and torture mad by the AA.

The AA detained two NLD members and one of them is MP Hwei Tin of Paletwa Constituency. The other one is Ye Thein, who was confirmed dead by the NLD.
