The Thai military rescued two Chinese tourists who were about to be trafficked into Myanmar, according to reports from Thai media.

On January 9, the two Chinese nationals—27-year-old Wu and 36-year-old Zhu—arrived in Phop Phra District, Tak Province, and were intercepted by Thai soldiers while waiting to cross into Myanmar. This was reported by Khaosod English.

The two had initially landed at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on January 9 and planned to visit Chiang Mai. However, their hired driver diverted their route and took them to the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak Province. It was during their wait to cross the border that Thai authorities intervened and rescued them.

Following the rescue, the Thai military brought the two Chinese tourists to the Mae Sot Police Station for questioning and assisted them in contacting their families, according to the report from Khaosod English.

Thai media also noted an increase in incidents of Chinese nationals disappearing near the Thai-Myanmar border in recent weeks.
