The Covid-19 vaccination of basic education students aged between 12 and 18 will start in Nay Pyi Taw as a pilot project, said Deputy Health Minister Dr Aye Tun during a coordination meeting on vaccinating middle and high school students on October 1.

He stressed the need to inoculate students so they can be protected from Covid-19 when schools reopen during the pandemic. He added that basic education students in Nay Pyi Taw would receive Sinovac jabs as a pilot project.

Some of the global countries are administering vaccines to students at primary, middle and high school levels. Myanmar is using the Covishield, Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines, recognized by the WHO as emergency use. Of them, Sinovac, which is safe for children, will be administered to the students, the deputy minister said.

Two million more doses of Sinovac donated by China will be arriving soon, he added.

Myanmar has 36.9 million people aged 18 and above eligible to receive Covid jabs. And 7.8 million of them have been administered first or full doses accounting for 15%, according to the health ministry.
