The Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services announced today (April 22) that the temporary ceasefire period has been extended from April 23 to April 30.
According to the statement, the extension is intended to show solidarity with the public affected by the powerful earthquake that struck Mandalay on March 28, and to facilitate effective rescue and recovery operations while maintaining national peace and stability. A previous ceasefire was already in place from April 2 to April 22.
The government continues to carry out reconstruction and recovery efforts with urgency in the affected areas. The statement also noted that international rescue and medical teams are actively providing support, including supplies and essential assistance.
The reconstruction efforts include restoring damaged government offices, public housing, transportation infrastructure, and reviving agriculture-based industries. The statement emphasized that collective national effort is key to returning the country to normalcy as swiftly as possible.
The military reiterated that this ceasefire aims to accelerate the recovery of quake-hit regions, safeguard national interests, and contribute to long-lasting and genuine peace.
During the ceasefire period, armed ethnic groups and other armed organizations are urged not to disrupt public transportation routes, damage civilian lives or property, attack security forces or military bases, or engage in any actions that could destabilize peace, such as mobilization or territorial expansion.
The military warned that it would take necessary defensive actions to protect the public if such incidents occur.
