In earthquake-stricken Mandalay, victims report being unable to recover valuable belongings from destroyed apartments and condominiums.

Following the Sky Villa condo collapse, a family from the Thukha Diamond House lost several members and has been unable to retrieve their remaining belongings. A family member posted on social media:

"In the Mandalay Sky Villa incident, we lost seven family members and staff from Thukha Diamond House. We had to hire private teams and volunteers to recover the bodies. We submitted a partial list of lost items (not the full inventory), but when we went to collect them yesterday, they only returned my daughter’s passport and two of her dolls. There’s been no update on the rest of our belongings. This isn’t just our case—many others haven’t gotten anything back. During demolition, owners aren’t even allowed inside. We’ve lost both our loved ones and our possessions."

Photos shared by the family show that lost items included precious gemstones and jewelry.

Another victim, who lost three family members in the Great Wall Hotel collapse, expressed frustration over missing valuables:

"I don’t want compensation—I just want my late husband’s bag, which had some jade stones. I begged the hotel to find it, but they couldn’t. After the funerals, when I finally checked, I only got back a few clothes and minor jade items meant as gifts. The high-value jade is still missing. I’m not asking for money—I just want my husband’s last belongings."

On March 28, a powerful earthquake centered near Mandalay caused widespread destruction, collapsing homes, hotels, and condominiums. Clearance operations are still ongoing.
