TOKYO - Nearly 20 people had been injured, some critically, after a man went on a stabbing rampage in a park close to Japan's capital Tokyo on Tuesday morning.

The local fire department was alerted to the incident at around 7:45 am local time, which occurred in a park in a residential area near Noborito Station in Kawasaki City.

According to the latest local media reports, of the some 20 people who were stabbed in the frenzied attack, 16 of them were children of elementary school age.

The police said that two adults and one child are without vital signs as a result of the attack.

The suspect, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, has been taken into custody. Local police said that the attacker himself has sustained serious injuries to his shoulder and neck as a result of a self-inflicted wound.

According to the police, the suspect is unconscious as a result of stabbing himself in the neck. Police have retrieved two knives from the scene of the attack.
