Sinopharm vaccines are being administered to those needing second doses in Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay these days, while those aged 65 and above are being vaccinated in some designated places, but not in large numbers, according to the ministry of health and sports.
Respective departments are taking measures for vaccinations as quickly as possible after vaccine doses have arrived in one batch after another.
The transport of those vaccines to various regions and states has started. The regions that have received the vaccines are preparing to vaccinate a large number of people in the first week of August. In Yangon Region, vaccination centers will be announced in due course as the list of those at the age of 65 and above has already been made, the ministry reported.
According to the 2014 national census, there are 2.8 million people aged 65 and above. Of them, 800,000 have been administered first doses of Covishield vaccine.
Vaccination has prioritized those elderly people as they usually have underlying health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes or kidney disease. If they are infected with Covid-19, they are likely to have severe symptoms and illness needing hospitalization or even ICU.
The health and sports ministry has called for public cooperation to control the spread of Covid-19 urging the people to wear masks without fail when going outside, wash their hands frequently and distance them from each other. It has also called on the public to raise Covid-19 awareness among offices, departments and families.
