People’s Party Chair U Ko Ko Gyi said that, amid ongoing conflicts, Myanmar needs a national unity–style government after the election rather than a winner-takes-all administration.
He made the remarks on January 25 after casting his vote at Polling Station No. (2) in Ward No. (2), Lanmadaw Township, during Phase (3) of the multi-party general election. U Ko Ko Gyi stressed that even if a single party wins enough seats to form a government, it should still include ethnic leaders and democratic forces to help resolve the country’s conflicts.
He noted that he has advocated for a national unity government since before the 2020 election, long before the idea of the NUG emerged, and said such an approach remains essential today. He emphasized that leadership maturity, openness, and empathy are crucial in times of heightened conflict, warning that political polarization would prevent national recovery.
U Ko Ko Gyi also called on the next parliament and government to prioritize peace by actively pursuing dialogue and negotiations. Drawing comparisons with the post-2010 period, he said the current situation requires peace-building to be the top priority due to intensified armed conflict.
In addition, he urged unsuccessful election candidates to remain politically active outside parliament by voicing opinions, raising issues, and contributing to public debate, noting that one-party dominance weakens checks and balances.
Responding to questions about whether the election could be a political “way out,” he said it is not an ideal solution but the option that minimizes harm, adding that significant challenges still lie ahead.
U Ko Ko Gyi is contesting the election as a Pyithu Hluttaw candidate for the Lanmadaw Township constituency.
