Pazundaung UEC sub-commissioner dies from COVID-19

YANGON----The Chairman of Union Election sub-commission from Pazundaung Township, Yangon Region, had died from COVID-19 on December 12th  and there are seven more fatalities amongst the election sub-commission in Yangon Region and polling staffers. 

“Before the Nov.8 General Election, the election sub-commission’s chairman had poor health and he was over 70 years old. So, he went to Fever Clinic. Later, he was kept in Quarantine at Hlaing Township and then he was transferred to Yangon General Hospital. We heard that he died from COVID-19 on December 12th,” said Min Ko Aung, a secretary of Yangon East District Election Sub-commission.

Kyaw Moe Kyi, member of Yangon Region Election sub-commission told the Daily Eleven on December 10th that the Nov.8th General Election was very important for the nation. Although preventive measures against the COVID-19 were carried out, there had been infections. 

Yangon Region Election sub-commission announced on December 8th that over 60 polling staffers and other ranks from election sub-commission had been infected with COVID-19 after the Nov.8th General Election. But, six people died from COVID-19.

The announcement also reported that the relevant election sub-commissions provided cash assistance to the victims.

Some members of election sub-commission and polling staffers had been infected with COVID-19 before the Nov.8th General Election.

Likewise, some family members of the infected sub-election commission’s members had been put in Quarantine and some were also infected with the Coronavirus.

Some staff from Mandalay Region Election sub-commission and Bago Region Election sub-commission had been infected with the COVID-19.

Myanmar reports over 100,000 COVID-19 cases and Yangon, Mandalay, Ayeyawady and Bago regions have the largest number of COVID-19 patients across the country.

Dr Zaw Myo Hlaing, Secretary of Myanmar Teachers’ Federation said that in Myanmar, over 100 school teachers who had acted as the polling station officers and deputy polling station officers during Nov.8th General Election had been infected with COVID-19. Among the patients, Yangon Region had the largest numbers of over 60 infected cases.
