MAWLAMYAING- About 16 houses including buildings in Paung and Zin Kyaik Townships, Mon State, were severely damaged by a tornado yesterday morning, according to the locals.

“Tornado hit the four wards in the downtown of Zin Kyaik Township at about 12:30am. Due to the tornado, all trees along the road and branches fell down as well as the roofs were blown out. But, there was no injury,” said Zaw Min from Zin Kyaik Township.

He also said that the tornado especially wrecked Myanma Post and Telecommunication [Auto Exchange] and ripped the roof off PTO phone booth and a house.

Likewise, tornado destroyed seven houses, school building, shrine and community hall in Ah Hlat village, Paung Township, at about 4:15am, yesterday. Moreover, a lamp post collapsed due to a tornado.

“After tornado hit yesterday night, we carried out the cleanings together with General Administrative Department, Fire Brigade and local peoples. Some houses were severely damaged and some lost about three or four galvanized iron sheets,” MP Zaw Zaw Htoo from Paung Township.

He added that the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement provided some galvanized iron sheets, Ks 100,000 for each damaging house. Plans were underway to individually provide cash and kind assistances for the victims by connecting with the Mon State Government Committee.

Likewise, storm and tornado hit in Mon State in early September destroying over 570 houses, six schools and some monasteries.

Moreover, a total of 41 houses had been damaged in Paung and Ye Townships due to a tornado hit at night of September 2nd.
