The construction of an underpass on Pyay Road in Yangon is set to finish by December this year, said Win Myint Than, member-7 of the Yangon City Development Committee during a press conference on February 17. 

“Construction cost is nearly Ks2.15 billion. YCDC is taking charge of the project. We are trying to complete the project by December 2020,” he said. 

One lane of the six-lane Pyay Road will not have access to traffic during the project. 

“On February 21, there will be a detour. Those who use the route from Mingalardon to the city centre can use the full three lanes. Underpass construction will not cause traffic congestion,” Win Myint Than said. 

The project includes escalators for the disabled, shops and automatic generators. 

“Underpass is 77 feet wide. Underpass projects in Singapore have no shops. But our project will include shops due to security reasons. The underpass is 10 feet high,” he added. 

Measures are being taken such as moving 46 trees to Hlawga Park, ventilating and adopting an earthquake-resistant system. 

Win Myint Than said underpass construction would reduce traffic accidents. 

First, a pedestrian bridge was to be built but the underpass project trumped it due to space difficulty.
