More than 80 per cent of households in Yangon Region will gain access to national grid at the end of 2019-20 FY, said Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein on September 6.

“We will try to transform towns outside Yangon municipal area to become like big towns for the convenience of people lived in the towns and worked in the towns. We are trying to merge the towns as a mega city. In doing so, gaining access to national grid is important. If we cannot have electricity, we will not have development. Yangon Region will gain access fully to national grid in 2020-21 FY,” he said.

Myanmar is generating over 3,000 megawatts of electricity and over half of them are used by Yangon Region alone. In comparing with other states and regions, Yangon Region is the biggest in electric consumption, he said.
