Yangon Region had 56 factories closed and 117 others that were closed temporarily or cut jobs within seven months from January 1 to July 31 this year, leaving over 41,000 jobless, said Region Minister for Immigration and Human Resources Moe Moe Su Kyi.

The minister disclosed the information after a question of Region MP Aye Aye Mar for Lanmadaw Township Constituency (1) about the Covid-19 impact on Yangon employment situation.

The MP asked about the number of factories closed and any government plan to restore jobs for the jobless.

“From January 1 to July 31, there were 173 factories that were temporarily closed or made redundancies including 56 closed down. Consequently, 41,395 workers lost their jobs. But, a lot of them have been applying for jobs at the factories whose job vacancies are announced at the Labour Department,” the minister said.

She added that factories and businesses have to employ workers after signing employment contracts required to follow the 21 points issued by the Labour Department.

The Factories and General Labour Law Inspection Department is dealing with the benefits for employers and employees regarding those 173 factories. Meanwhile, Yangon Region Labour Affairs Department and township departments will be dealing with any complaints from workers in accord with the 2012 labour dispute settlement law for their compensation, the minister said.
