A prisoner was killed and two prison staff and two inmates were injured in a riot that occurred at Nyaungshwe Prison in Taunggyi Township, Shan State, announced the information team of the State Administration Council (SAC).

It is reported that about 15 inmates from a two-story dormitory in Nyaungshwe Prison broke the wooden railings of the dormitory stairs at 8:30 am on March 14, assaulted two prison staff on duty, and tried to escape by climbing over the brick wall.

In the riot, about 15 prisoners broke the wooden railings of the stairs in their dormitories and used them as weapons to attack the prison staff and tried to escape by climbing over the brick wall through the west of the dormitory. Although the staff of the tower fired shots to scare them, the inmates did not obey. They screamed and destroyed the CCTV cables and the solar lantern post. They threw stones at the guards in the surrounding area, it said.

The staff on duty of the tower fired about five shots in accordance with the legal procedure in order to ensure that the inmates and prisoners in other dormitories do not cause further riots and there is no breach of security due to the riots like the above, and stabilized the situation at 9:00 am.

As a result of the incident, one prisoner was killed and two prison staff and two prisoners were injured, according to the statement.

According to the preliminary investigation of the incident, it is known that some of the convicted prisoners, who committed the terrorist crimes, attempted to escape as a result of which other prisoners also participated. It has been announced that further investigation and action will be taken in accordance with the procedure in order to reveal the truth of the incident.
