Number of IDPs reaches over 1.8 million caused by armed conflict and insecurity throughout Myanmar

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA Myanmar) has announced that the number of internally displaced person (IDP) has reached more than 1.8 million due to the armed conflicts in Myanmar.

In the last few weeks, civilian casualties and damage to civilian property occurred in Hpa-kant, Shwegu and Sumprabum Townships in Kachin State due to heavy fighting, including airstrikes and heavy weapons fire, according to the OCHA Myanmar.

The OCHA Myanmar also reported that over 1,300 villagers from Shwegu Township already have been displaced since the beginning of early March and they then took the shelters at 10 temporary camps and in the jungle. 

OCHA Myanmar said in a statement that humanitarian needs are increasing due to ongoing conflicts throughout Myanmar. 

As of March 27, 2023, according to the latest figures from the United Nations, there have been more than 1.8 million IDPs in Myanmar, OCHA Myanmar said in a statement.

Of these, nearly 1.4 million people have fled their homes due to the conflicts and insecurity caused by the political changes since February 1, 2021, OCHA Myanmar said in a statement.
