The number of internally displaced people in Myanmar has reached more than 1.9 million due to armed conflict and insecurity, and humanitarian needs remain high, announced the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

The ongoing conflicts between the Tatmadaw and various armed groups in the country's southeast, north-east and north-west has led to further increases in the number of people displaced and humanitarian needs, UNOCHA said.

In the past two weeks, more than 22,000 people have fled their homes in the southeast. Fighting between the Tatmadaw and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) near Nantsanyan Village in Waimaw Township, Kachin State is intense, UNOCHA reported.

As of July 26, UNOCHA announced that more than 700 people from villages in Waimaw and Momauk townships had been evacuated to safe places.

As of July 24, 2023, according to the latest figures of the United Nations, the number of internally displaced people in Myanmar has reached more than 1.9 million, and of these, nearly 1.6 million people are those who fled their homes due to the conflict and insecurity that occurred after the political change in February 2021, UNOCHA announced.
