A new Mawlamyine prison is being built in Min village, Mawlamyine Township, Mon State, according to sources close to the state government.

Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Theing visited the new prison construction site onJune 23 and gave an instruction on construction of the prison meeting the set standard and timely completion. He urged the construction companies to cooperate with goodwill and fulfill necessary requirements.

A three-storey control building, a two-storey building for inmates, a mess hall, staff quarters and fencing have been reportedly built.

Mon State has a Kyaikmaraw central prison in Kyaikmaraw Township in Mon State, a Thaton prison in Thaton Township, a Mawlamyine prison in Mawlamyine Township, Zinkyaik, Inbyaung, and Marlar Phoo prison camps in Paung Township, a Taungson prison in Bilin Township, Ingabo and Moatpalin prison camps in Kyaikhto Township.
