Nearly 600 people arrested, charged and imprisoned: AAPP

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) issued a statement that 569 people were arrested, charged and sentenced to prison from February 1 to February 20.

Among the 569 people, 4 were sentenced to prison, 33 were filed a lawsuit with an arrest warrant, 3 were charged and 46 were released and till now, 523 people were arrested and charged.

In-charge of AAPP of Yangon office Aung Kyaw Myo said that arrest and filing them for lawsuits are not the answers and the military coup leaders must respect and implement the demands made by the public immediately.

Due to the arrest of  State Counsellor and President Win Myint by the military,  demonstrations against the coup have been staged in the entire Myanmar since February 6. The military cracked down the peaceful protestors in Mandalay, Myitkyina and some places resulted in fatalities and some were wounded and some were arrested. On February 20 cracked down in Yadanarbon jetty in Mandalay, 2 were shot dead, 17 were seriously wounded and 35 injured. 

Use of excessive force on unarmed peaceful protestors is a violation of 2008 Constitution, Section 353.

The United Nations also condemned the firing of live ammunition to un-armed protestors in Mandalay and Myitkyina and Nay Pyi Taw. The numbers of arrests have been increasing to political activists, artists while the entire Myanmar is staging protests against military rule.
