The Myitkyina-Mohnyin-Myitkyina railway section, which has been closed for more than 5 years due to political situation, has resumed, and the Myitkyina-Mohnyin downbound route will be inaugurated on the morning of July 21, according to sources.
Speaking at the ceremony, Kachin State Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan said that the reopening of Train No.49 upbound and Train No.50 downbound between Myitkyina and Mohnyin would help ease transportation difficulties faced by residents along the Myitkyina–Mogaung–Mohnyin railway corridor. He said the restored service would also facilitate regional travel and the transportation of goods. The Chief Minister noted that the resumption of operations reflected the joint efforts of the Kachin State Government and Myanma Railways (MR) in line with the guidance of the Union Government. He urged the public to help preserve and protect the railway infrastructure and rolling stock to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Following the opening ceremony of the Myitkyina-Mohnyin Railway Section No.50 downbound, the Chief Minister and accompanying officials traveled on the inaugural journey, stopping at stations along the route. At each station, they were welcomed by Myanma Railways officials, government employees, students, community leaders, and local ethnic residents.
During the journey, the Chief Minister met with passengers and local residents, saying that the restored railway service would help improve the flow of goods and stimulate local economic development. He added that the service uses upgraded passenger coaches, allowing travelers to enjoy a safer, more comfortable, and convenient journey.
“To be honest, I feel both emotional and overjoyed. Because of the political situation, I thought my children might never see trains running here again. Seeing the railway restored brought tears to my eyes. This is the train service people have been waiting for. I congratulate the MR and the state authorities, and I sincerely appeal to those who carry out acts of destruction not to damage the railway tracks or stations,” wrote a resident of Hopin on social media.
The reopening of the more than 90-mile Myitkyina–Mohnyin railway section is being implemented as part of the new government's 100-day action plan. Regular passenger services will operate as Train No.49 upbound Mohnyin–Myitkyina and Train No.50 downbound Myitkyina–Mohnyin.
The No.49 upbound Mohnyin-Myitkyina passenger train will depart from Mohnyin Station at 6:00 am and arrive at Myitkyina Station at 1:15 pm, while the No.50 downbound Myitkyina-Mohnyin passenger train will depart from Myitkyina Station at 6:00 am and arrive at Mohnyin Station at 1:00 pm. For end-to-end travel, fares are 25,000 kyats for upper-class seats and 15,000 kyats for ordinary-class seats. The trains will stop at all stations along the route. Tickets may be purchased in advance at respective stations, with upper-class tickets available three days before departure and ordinary-class tickets one day in advance.
The Mohnyin–Mogaung–Myitkyina railway section forms part of the Mandalay–Myitkyina main railway line. It serves as a key transportation link within Kachin State, providing residents with an affordable means of travel between townships and enabling agricultural and local products to reach markets. During the rainy season, when road transport often becomes difficult, the railway provides a reliable and safe alternative for passengers and freight.
