Myanmar Rice Federation Warns Against Price Gouging Amid Floods
Published 18 August 2026

The Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) issued a statement on August 18 urging merchants and millers not to exploit recent heavy rains and flooding to hike rice prices. The federation clarified that current supply relies on existing stockpiles from previous harvest seasons, ensuring domestic reserves remain sufficient through the end of the year. Traders and retailers were called upon to maintain fair, stable pricing rather than stoking panic to justify unreasonable markups.

To stabilize the market, the MRF is offering 100,000 bags (108 lbs each) of 15% broken Ahe-ma-hta rice at 70,000 MMK per bag for charity and social welfare groups aiding flood-affected areas. Additionally, households in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw can order 108-lb bags of Shwebo Pawsan for 200,000 MMK and Ayeyawady Pawsan for 150,000 MMK for home delivery within five days of payment via KBZPay. Orders can be placed by emailing [email protected] or messaging via Viber at 09-400067240, 09-400067250, and 09-400067260.
