Moderate earthquakes continue to shake in central Myanmar

A total of four moderate earthquakes hit Myanmar in a row on the morning of April 11, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) and some locals.

The first earthquake was measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale at a depth of 23 kilometers, about 9 miles east-northeast of Wandwin at 8:43 am. The second earthquake was centered about 13 miles west-northwest of Taungoo at a depth of 13 kilometers, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale at 9:02 am.

The third earthquake was centered about 5 miles southeast of Wandwin at a depth of 10 kilometers, measuring 5 on the Richter scale at 10:59 am.

The fourth quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, struck at 11:28 am, about three miles east-southeast of Mahlaing town, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The quake was felt in areas such as Taungoo, Thetaw, Wandwin, and Inle Lake in Shan State, according to residents in the area.

“The tremor was very strong. People didn’t dare to stay indoors. We don’t know how long it will last. Everyone is out on the streets,” said a resident of Thetaw and Wandwin.

A person who was helping with the damage caused by the powerful earthquake in Inle Lake also said he felt the tremors.
